Boat Grooming & Detailing

Cut, polish, wax and interior detailing to bring tired gelcoat back.

Grooming is not just about looks. UV and salt eat away at gelcoat and vinyl, and once the oxidation gets past a certain point you are into proper restoration rather than a quick polish. Keeping on top of it protects the surface and the resale value.

What’s included

  • Full exterior wash and salt removal
  • Cut and polish to remove oxidation and chalking
  • Gelcoat restoration and machine buffing
  • Marine-grade wax and UV protection
  • Hull cleaning and waterline stain removal
  • Non-skid deck cleaning
  • Upholstery and vinyl cleaning, conditioning and protection
  • Interior, carpet and locker detailing
  • Stainless polishing and canopy cleaning
  • Pre-sale presentation detailing

Bringing back faded gelcoat

Chalky, dull topsides are oxidised gelcoat, where the surface layer has broken down under UV. A machine cut takes the dead layer off and brings the gloss back, then polish refines it and wax protects it. Done properly, a hull that looked past it comes up surprisingly well.

How far we have to go depends on how far gone it is. Boats caught early just need a polish and wax. Badly neglected ones need a heavier cut first.

Interior and upholstery

Marine vinyl dies from UV, salt and neglect, and once it cracks there is no bringing it back. Cleaning and conditioning it a couple of times a season costs almost nothing and adds years to the seats. We do the carpets, lockers and all the awkward spots that never get touched either.

Getting a boat ready to sell

A well presented boat sells faster and for noticeably more than the same boat caked in salt with dull topsides and grubby seats. If you are about to list it, a full groom is one of the best returns you will get on a few hundred dollars.

We can do a pre-sale groom and a service together, so it looks the part and has a current service record behind it.

Questions

Boat Grooming: common questions

How often should a boat be groomed?

A full cut, polish and wax once a year is a good baseline for a boat kept outside. Hose the salt off after every trip and that annual groom gets a lot easier and cheaper.

Can you fix badly chalked, faded gelcoat?

Usually yes. A machine cut takes off the oxidised layer and restores the gloss, then polish and wax protect it. Really far gone gelcoat takes more work, and we will tell you honestly what is achievable before we start.

Do you groom the interior as well?

Yes. Upholstery, vinyl, carpets, lockers and all the bits that usually get skipped, with conditioner and UV protection on the vinyl.

Can you groom my boat before I sell it?

Definitely, and it is well worth doing. Presentation makes a real difference to how fast a boat sells and what you get for it.

Getting started

One workshop for the whole boat

Engines, electronics, trailers, grooming and storage all happen in the same place, so jobs can be combined into one visit instead of three. Tell us what the boat is doing and we will tell you what it needs.
